Dr. Livingstone fought for the abolition of slavery in East Africa. Before his death, he asked that his heart be buried in Africa and his body returned to England.
This cross is made from wood from the tree under which his heart was buried in Chitambo, Illala, Zambia in 1873. Two of his friends, both African, carried his dessicated body to the coast on their backs. From there it was returned to England to fulfill his wish.
